Spanish is divided into six proficiency levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

OVERVIEW OF LANGUAGE LEVELS
Pre-A1 - Absolute Beginner
No prior knowledge of Spanish. Ideal for those who have never studied the language.
A1 - Low to Mid Beginner
Can understand and use basic phrases, introduce themselves, and answer simple questions.
A2 - High Beginner to Low Intermediate
Can communicate in simple everyday situations and describe their surroundings.
B1 - Mid to Upper Intermediate
Can discuss familiar topics, express opinions, and understand simple conversations.
B2 - Advanced
Can interact fluently in professional or academic settings and justify opinions.
C1 - High Advanced
Can express themselves clearly, fluently, and spontaneously on complex topics.
C2 - Mastery / Distinguished
Can understand virtually everything and communicate naturally with precision.
DETAILED OVERVIEW OF EACH LEVEL
At Pre-A1 level, you have little to no previous experience with Spanish. You may recognize a few words or expressions, but you are just starting to learn the language.
What you can do at Pre-A1 level:

Understand a few familiar words when spoken very slowly and clearly

Recognize greetings and basic classroom or travel-related vocabulary

Learn how to pronounce Spanish sounds and letters

Begin to build confidence with simple words like "hola", "gracias", or "adiós"
At this stage, you're building the foundation for future learning - step by step.
At A1 level, you can understand and use simple everyday expressions and basic phrases. You can introduce yourself and others, ask and answer personal questions, and interact in a very simple way—provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
What you can do at A1 level:

Greet people and introduce yourself.

Ask and answer basic questions (name, nationality, preferences).

Understand simple, slow speech in predictable contexts.

Use basic verbs like ser, tener, querer, and gustar.
Example A1 conversation:
- Anna: "What’s your name?"
- Juan: "My name is Juan."
- Anna: "Where are you from?"
- Juan:"I am from the US."
At A2 level, you can understand frequently used phrases related to personal and everyday topics. You can communicate in routine situations, describe your background, and express simple needs.
What you can do at A2 level:

Ask for directions and understand simple travel conversations.

Describe daily activities using present and past tenses.

Express likes and dislikes with simple reasoning.
Example conversation (A2):
Maria: "What did you do yesterday?"
Juan: "I went to the city and ate pizza."
At B1 level, you can handle most everyday situations while traveling in a Spanish-speaking country. You can talk about past events, express opinions, and interact in basic work or study settings.
What you can do at B1 level:

Use past and future tenses with ease.
Example conversation (B1):

At B2 level, you can communicate fluently with native speakers and understand complex discussions. You can write detailed texts, defend arguments, and manage work-related conversations.
What you can do at B2 level:

Participate in group discussions about abstract topics.

Understand news reports, movies, and professional conversations.

Write emails and essays with clear arguments.

Express conditional ideas and use the subjunctive mood.
Example conversation (B2):
Paul: "What would you do if you won the lottery?"
Anna: "I would travel the world and learn more languages!"
At C1 level, you can express yourself fluently and spontaneously in nearly all situations. You understand complex texts, use nuanced expressions, and adapt your speech to different social contexts.
What you can do at C1 level:

Give presentations and speak confidently in debates.

Understand long, sophisticated texts and idiomatic expressions.

Adapt your language to different registers (formal/informal).

Use all verb tenses naturally, including advanced subjunctive forms.
Example conversation (C1):
Juan: "How has globalization affected Latin America?"
Maria: "It has significantly influenced economies and cultural exchanges, but opinions vary depending on the region."
At C2 level, you can understand virtually everything you read or hear. You can express yourself precisely and spontaneously, recognizing subtle differences in meaning and tone.
What you can do at C2 level:

Speak like a native, using idiomatic expressions naturally.

Understand academic texts, literature, and complex discussions.

Negotiate, persuade, and express sarcasm or humor effectively.

Write detailed reports, essays, or creative texts with stylistic finesse.
Example conversation (C2):
